Original source for Ancestry.com online database-- Book: Republic of Texas: Poll Lists for 1846 compiled by Marion Day Mullins from manuscript tax rolls consisting of 5,718 volumes held originally at the State Comptroller's office, then at the Texas State Library from 1947-1958 and then transferred to the State Archives in 1962. Published in 1974 by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc; Baltimore, Maryland. Reprinted in 1982, 1995 & 1998. Further explanation of how the 1846 Tax Rolls came to be from the book Foreward: "This 1846 poll list is the nearest thing we have to a complete census of the period. A "Poll" tax of one dollaar was applied to every white male resident over the age of tweenty-one and to women who were heads of households (usually widows). In making the tax rolls the assessor was required to prepare at least two alphabetical copies from his original lists. One copy went to the State Treasurer and one to the Sheriff who made the collections."
