Andrew Jackson Simpson was born to Joseph Claude Simpson and Susan Hogan Simpson in Montgomery County, Alabama. In 1858, the family moved to Chambers County, Texas, leaving behind Louisa Jane, who had married and had children.
On March 27, 1862, Simpson enrolled in the Confederate Cavalry at Liberty, Texas for a period of 3 years. At age 18, he was mustered into the 25th Texas Cavalry (3rd Regiment, Texas Gillespie Lancers) on May 3, 1862 at Camp Carter near Hempstead. He brought his horse, valued at $85, and $25 worth of equipment to the fight.
Union forces captured Company H at Fort Hindman during the Battle of Arkansas Post January 11, 1863. (See https://www.nps.gov/abpp/battles/ar006.htm) Simpson was held prisoner at Camp Butler, Illinois until he was exchanged for prisoners and assigned as dismounted cavalry to Gen. Grant's Union Army of Tennessee. He was captured again by William T. Sherman's Army near Atlanta on July 22, 1864 and sent to Camp Chase, Ohio (near Columbus) until March 1865 when he was furloughed and paroled. He is in May Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi on March 26, 1865. He had previously been hospitalized for acute intestinal problems.
He married Dorcas Ann Rochelle before 1870. Together they had 10 children, all born in Brazoria County. After his wife dies in 1899, Andrew Simpson moved to Galveston. He survived the Great Hurricane of 1900 and applied for a pension in 1913, which he received. His pension record states he worked as a waterman. The Galveston City Directories list his occupation as carpenter and stable hand in the years following the Hurricane. In 1920, he moved to Houston and lived with his daughter Edna and her husband Alfred Bisbey. He dies there in 1922 from "shock" with a stomach hemorrhage as a contributing factor.2,3
