Mildred Martin

F, #2925, b. circa 1781, d. between 1820 and 1824
Mildred Martin's birthdate is unknown, but believed to be around 1781. If married to HTM around the age of 20, she would have been born 1780-83. She and Hugh Teares Middleton Jr. married in 1802. This date is based on known birth of their son William H Middleton during the summer of 1803.1 Mildred Martin married Captain Samuel Savage Jr. in 1804.1 She died between 1820 and 1824 before Samuel Savage's remarriage on June 1 1824 but after birth of John Tacitus Savage in 1820.

Direct, primary documentation has not been found to link Mildred (Millie) Middleton Savage to Charles & Patsy (Moon) Martin. It is believed, however, that Charles and Patsy are her parents. Examples of direct or primary documentation would be Bible records, marriage, will, probate or court records, a contemporaneous letter or document naming her parents or sibling of one of their known children or a land record identifying her as a daughter, etc. Lacking a primary source, we rely on a preponderance of secondary evidence. We believe that Mildred (Millie) Middleton Savage was born Mildred Martin, daughter of Charles & Patsy (Moon) Martin for the following reasons:
1. NAMING TRADITIONS: Mildred (Millie) may have been named after Charles Martin’s sister Mildred and/or after Patsy’s mother, Mildred Cobb who married Jacob Moon. The name seems to be prevalent throughout the Martin/Moon families. Millie and her first husband, Hugh T. Middleton Jr. named their only son, William H. Middleton (Millie had a brother named William). In addition, Millie and her second husband Samuel Savage Jr. named a son Charles Savage (possibly after her father); a son George Martin Savage (her maiden name Martin) and a daughter, Sarah (possibly after a sister).
2. CHARLES MARTIN’S WILL AND PROBATE: This file from Abbeville SC, Box 64, pkg 1548, filed in 1808 does not name all his children. The will is written June 28, 1808. Charles leaves most of his estate to sons Jacob Martin, George Washington Martin and William Martin (who he says is not married at time will is written). He names a daughter - whose first name is not clearly legible but may be Suckey Moor. He names grandsons, James and Thomas Cobbs and a granddaughter, Patsy Bibb. He leaves his wife Pattey (Patsy) Martin a life estate. Then he leaves $100 to Sally Nichols but only after his wife is deceased. Later he divides all the remainder of his estate to his surviving children except that he excludes Sally Nichols. He names executors, Jacob Martin, George W. Martin and wife Pattey. Witnesses are Nathaniel Baben, Sml? Sinton and William Drinhard. Several known children (Thomas, Abraham, Bird, Nancy, Patsy and our Millie) are not named. If only Millie were left out of his will we might conclude that all the children were named and therefore she was not his daughter. That other children were left out is significant.
3. The MARTIN, MIDDLETON AND SAVAGE FAMILIES lived in close proximity during the correct time period. The Martin family arrived in Old Ninety Six in 1784; the Middleton Family received land grants in the area as early as 1772; and the Savage family arrived around 1774. Numerous records of the patriarchs and their children are found throughout Old Ninety Six (Abbeville & Edgefield) naming all three families in land and court records during this time frame.
4. 1857 MARTIN FAMILY GENEALOGY BY DR. SAMEUL DAVIES MARTIN: The most compelling documentation that Mildred (Millie) was the daughter of Charles Martin is a work done in 1857 by Dr. Samuel Davies Martin (born 1791) titled “Genealogical Record of the Martin Family”. Dr. S. D. Martin was not only a contemporary of our Millie but also her first cousin; he being the son of Major John Martin. Major John Martin was a brother of Millie’s father, Charles Martin Sr. Therefore Dr. S.D. Martin should have had first-hand knowledge of Millie, her parents, marriages and her children. If his actual booklet dated in 1857 were ever located, it would come very close to meeting the standard for a contemporaneous primary source.

While we have not been able to locate a copy of his original self-published 1857 work, we do have a 20 page Booklet found in the Caroliniana Library titled "Genealogical Record of the Martin Family From 1680 to 1886printed in Charleston, S.C. by Walker, Evans & Cogswell Printers, 1886, call #929.2 M36. This is an early reprint by Alfred M. Martin of Dr. Samuel Davies Martin's 1857 work, with additional information added. On page 14 we find this entry: " Charles, son of Thomas Martin, married Miss **Moore; his children were: William 1764, never married; Jacob married Nancy Moore; Susan married William Moore; Nancy married Mr. Cobb; Mildred married Mr. Middleton and Samuel Savage; George W. married Nancy Benning; Charles married Joyce Smith." While this information is not "sourced" in the booklet it is creditable due to the early date (1857) that it was committed to writing. **One inconsistency stands out with Charles Martin's wife reported as "Moore" not "Moon" (this was either a typo or just a mistake as it is proven that Charles wife was, in fact, Patsy Moon).

Further additions, corrections to the above work were done by Anne Carrington Martin Porcher in 1933 and 1934. Source citation for her work is included for those interested in locating this work: Porcher, Anne C. "The Martin Family, 1680-1934" based on the 1857 self-published work of Dr. Samuel Davies Martin as reprinted in 1886 by Alfred M. Martin, Anne C. Porcher. The Martin Family, 1680-1934 Archive: https://archive.org/details/martinfamily168000porc/page/n1/mode/2up, uploaded 2019 by Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center: “Original mimeographed** pages were self-published in 1857, by Dr. Samuel Davies Martin (born 1791) of Winchester, Kentucky under title "Genealogical Record of the Martin Family." It was distributed throughout the country to relatives asking for corrections and additions. The manuscript was republished in 1886 by Hon. Alfred M. Martin; then corrected and added to, by Anne Carrington Martin Porcher in 1933 and 1934. Fifty two additional, numbered pages were inserted by Mrs. Porcher.” Mrs. Porcher inserted pages showing additions, corrections and errata. As of 2022, the book can be viewed or downloaded at http://www.archive.org with search parameters of: Title- Martin Family and Creator- Porcher. **It is unlikely that Dr. Martin had access to mimeograph technology in 1857. His self-published pamphlet was likely handwritten by him and then sent to a printer to be typeset and copies printed. The reference to mimeographed pages more likely refers to the 1896 reprint by the Hon. Alfred M. Martin.

5. MILDRED ‘MILLIE’ MARTIN PROVEN NOT TO BE BORN A TAYLOR: Speculation has been that Millie who first married Hugh Teare Middleton Jr. of Edgefield District, SC and second married Samuel Savage Jr., may have been the daughter of William Forbes Taylor. Middleton researcher, Harriet Imrey, has stated that W.F.Taylor was Millie’s father as "per his will". This is absolutely erroneous. W.F. Taylor died in 1811 and a copy of his will secured from Edgefield County, Will Book A, page 301, as proved August 11, 1811 reveals that there is no mention of a wife or any children. He left most of his estate to a friend and the balance to his brother (Samuel Taylor) and sister (Mary) who were living in Scotland. Samuel Savage Jr. was named executor.

In addition, there is a US Supreme Court Case TAYLOR v. BENHAM, 46 U.S. 233 (1847), that questions the actions of Samuel Savage, Jr. as executor for William Forbes Taylor, decd. By the time the case is heard Samuel Savage Jr. is also deceased so the case is really, being brought against the Estate of Samuel Savage Jr. (with his son George M. Savage as administrator). In this Supreme Court Case Taylor's heir testifies: "That the testator (Wm Forbes Taylor) had no kindred in the US at the time of his death, and that the said Samuel (Taylor) and Mary were, at the time his only heirs at law. Considering the above information, we can with confidence eliminate William Forbes Taylor as Millie’s father.

It is evident that William Forbes Taylor was a good friend of the Savage family as he named Samuel Savage Jr. his executor and also that Millie and Samuel Savage, Jr. named one of their sons William Forbes Taylor Savage. This son was killed at Coleto Creek days before the Goliad massacre, during the Texas Revolution. William Forbes Taylor Savage (known as Forbes) enlisted with Jack Shackelford’s ‘Alabama Red Rovers’ to fight in the Texas Revolution. There were only a few survivors of the Battle of Coleto Creek and the Battle of Goliad.

This work includes supporting references to wills, Bible records, census and land records that help fill in the particulars of the Martin family and further substantiate and add to the preponderance of evidence that Millie was the daughter of Charles Martin and Patsy Moon. Pages 164-165 list the children of Charles and Patty Moon Martin. Shown as number 13 is “Mildred m. 1 Mr. Middleton, m. 2. Samuel Savage”.2,3

     NOTE:
Three childrenn attributed to Charles Martin and Patsy Moon have been proven incorrect.
1. Nancy Martin: "The Martin Family" by Porcher shows a Nancy Martin married to Thomas Cobb. The records actually say it was Betsy Martin who married Thomas Cobb. Porcher doesn't show a child of Charles and Patsy named Betsy. Conclusion: There was no child named Nancy since the records do clearly show Betsy.
2. Abram Martin (with wife Anny): "Threads of Ancestors" by Mize listed Abram as a child of Charles and Patsy. Further research can find nothing to document that they had a child by that name. It is believed this Abram (Anny) is a brother of Thomas Sr who apparently was a child of a William Martin (who maybe be a brother of John Martin, Gentleman, son of Abram 1st) I have linked a floating tree linking William to Abram (Anny) and Thomas Sr.
3. Thomas Sr.: "Threads of Ancestors" by Mize listed Thomas Sr as a child of Charles and Patsy. Further research can find nothing to document that. It would seem that this Thomas Sr. is a brother of Abram (Anny) who apparently are children of a William Martin. Abram's (Anny) will/probate papers (1809) has Thomas Martin Sr. as administrator and shows that Thomas Sr. dies on Jan 6, 1830 I have linked a floating William to Abram (Anny) and Thomas Sr.

Captain Samuel Savage Jr.1

Captain Samuel Savage Jr. was born in Edgefield District, South Carolina, His parents were married in about 1772 and moved to Edgefield in 1774. If he was in fact born in Edgefield then he was born after 1774. Info from 'Threads of Ancestors.'      Samuel Savage, Jr died in 1837 but the battle over his $75000 ($2.2+ million in 2021 dollars) estate lasted until about 1850 or later. In addition to fighting within the family about the managment of the estate by George M Savage and Harvey Dilahunty, there was a suit against the estate by the Scottish heirs of William Forbes Taylor concerning Samuel's mismanagement of his estate. This suit went all the way to the US Supreme Court before it was settled and money distributed to the family.

Samuel G Savage III turned 21 in 1838 and was due his portion of his father's estate. He married Martha E Oates in 1839 and died intestate in 1840 without receiving the inheritance from his father. Martha sued for her deceased husband's share of the estate, which he should have received before his death and therefore would have been hers. She also claimed that George M Savage and Harvey Dilahunty mismanaged the estate and took more than their fair share. The family squabble ended up in the Alabama Supreme Court.

Samuel Savage's heirs in Texas and Tennessee exchanged many letters concerning the delayed receipt of their inheritence. Included in this collection of letters are communications concerning their rights to the land awarded Forbes Savage for his participation (and death at the Goliad Massacre) during the Texas Revolution.6,7,8

Forbes Savage was probably named after Samuel Savage's friend William Forbes Taylor.3 In the fall of 1835 Forbes Savage signed up with Dr. John "Jack" Shackelford's 'Alabama Red Rovers' as they were headed to fight with the Texians during the Texas Revolution. Upon arrival in Texas at Matagorda Bay in late January 1836, they marched to Goliad where they joined Colonel Fannin's army. On March 19, 1836 the Red Rovers encountered the Mexicans at Coleto Creek near Goliad and Forbes Savage was killed. The next day Fannin surrendered to the Mexicans and the remaining troops, including Col. Fannin, were massacred. Only a very few survived the Goliad Massacre. The rallying cry for the remainder of the war was 'Remember the Alamo: Remember Goliad'. Jack Shackelford was among the few survivors, only because the Mexicans needed his medical services in their hospital.
