When William came of age in 1823, he received his inheritance from his father. It included a large amount of land in Georgia above the city of Augusta in Springfield. This indicates that he probably settled on the land in Georgia and married there.

Around 1796, when Tennessee became a state, James Sharp and his wife Jemima Alexander Sharp relocated their family from Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to Davidson County, Tennessee. They settled in Old Jefferson on a fork on Stone's River in middle Tennessee. A short time later this area became Rutherford County and is near present day Nashville. It appears that they used James' 200 acre grant from the Federal government for his service during the American Revolution. It can be said that they were among the founding settlers of the state.2

James Sharp

M, #127, b. 1727, d. 1759
James Sharp was born in 1727 probably in Cecil County, Maryland. He and Jemima Alexander married circa 1750. James died in 1759 either Cecil County, Maryland or Anson County, North Carolina.2

Name Variations:

  • Some sources give John Sharp as the husband of Jemima Alexander rather than James. This seems to have begun with the manuscript written by Lou Sharp Crocket, their g-granddaughter. However Jemima's tombstone apparently errected within about 50 years of her death clearly states that she was the widow of James Sharp.3

When did James and Jemima Sharp move to North Carolina from Maryland? I have found some research that says Jemima came as a widow with her 7 children at the same time as her brothers, Hezakiah and John McKnitt. Others say she and her husband came from Maryland at the same time as her brothers and he died a short time later in North Carolina. It appears that the Alexander family migrated as a group in the first half of the 1750's.

However, the will of Thomas Sharp clearly names a son James along with the other children. One of these 'histories' was found in the DAR Library Patriot folder of James Sharp b 1727 in the form of a notarized staatement of authenticity of a family genealogy written by Louisa Sharp Crocket. I do not find this history to be completely accurate based on my research of the facts.4
