William Peterson

M, #61, d. circa May 1836
William Peterson was born, probably 1810-1820. that conclusion was reached based on the age of his wife (16) at the time of their marriage in 1836. And that when he entered Texas with his mother in 1832, he was still considered her child as opposed to an adult.1 He and Hannah Trenary married in 1835. Probably in Houston or Montgomery County.2,3 William died circa May 1836 in Montgomery County, Texas.

James Alexander (Yeoman) was born in 1689 in Manokin Hundred, Somerset County, Maryland, Colonial America; date & place based on generally accepted assumption, however my research has found no evidence of the family in Somerset County and 1st actual documentation places the family in Cecil County 'some years' before 1714. His will was recorded in 1779 indicating that he died in 1778/9. Other sources say he was between 89 when he died. See James Alexander of Piqua (son of Amos) memories of Cecil County.1 Between 1713 and 1716 James Alexander (Yeoman) married Margaret McKnitt, daughter of John McKnitt II and Jane Wallace, probably in Cecil County, Maryland. In 1746, after Margaret's death, James married Abigail, who is thought to have been Margaret's sister.      Not much is known about John Carter. It is only through a single census record that we know he was born about 1835 in England. Death certificates for his children confirm the country of his birth. He was a Bastrop County land owner and it is through land records that we know he was alive on Dec 30, 1892 when he gave promissary notes in part payment for land. In the Twelfth US Census in 1900, John's wife, Minerva was identified as a widow. This gives us a range of 1893-1900 as the time of John's death.4,6,7

Frederich Kaspar Alwin Feuerbacher1

M, #79, b. 9 September 1846, d. 23 May 1926
Alwin F Feuerbacher, abt 1883
Frederich Kaspar Alwin Feuerbacher was born on 9 September 1846 in Laubegast, Dresden, Saxony, Germany.1 He and Emma Theresa Hernsdorf married between 12 September 1869 and September 1870 in Dresden, Germany. The actual date and location has not yet been proven. However, Alwin Feuerbacher and Emma Theresa Hernsdorf were not married when both were named as godparents to Emma Bertha Feuerbacher, Alwin's niece, on 12 Sept 1869 in Dresden. Since their first child Paul, was born in June 1871, one can surmise they were married by September of 1870, probably in Dresden.2,3 On 23 May 1926 Alwin died in Austin, Texas at age 794 and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery (Annex) in Austin.5 His estate entered probate on 19 June 1926 in Travis County.6

Name Variations:

  • In general, I refer to our immigrant ancestor as Alwin in order to differentiate him from all the descendants named Alvin. Prior to fall 2022, the family only knew Alwin's name to be Frederick Alvin or Alvin Frederick. In 2022, it was discovered that his name was actually Frederich Kaspar Albin (Alwin) Feuerbacher. This was found in German church records giving his full name and the name of his father, Johann Kaspar Feuerbacher.1
  • Frederick Kaspar Alwin went by Alvin and seems to have completely dropped the Kaspar after arriving in America.
  • In America, Alwin normally signed his name as Alvin Frederick Feuerbacher

Click here, (Alwin Feuerbacher), to read the text of Alwin's short introduction as written in Chester W Feuerbacher's book, The Family of Alvin Feuerbacher and Emma Feuerbacher (nee Hernsdorf). Note that much of the information in the introduction was provided by a child or grandchild of Alwin & Emma's twelve children. If conflicting information has been found, it will be reflected elsewhere on the website.16

According to David G Feuerbacher, son of George H Feuerbacher, George made notes about the family history, probably in the late 1940s or early 1950s, based on his memory of what his father (Paul) and grandparents (Alwin & Emma) told him. Click here, (George's notes), to see the transcription of his notes. The transcriber's notations, corrections and/or comments are bold, in brackets [ ] or in italics.

For many years, those interested in the history of Alwin Feuerbacher and his family have searched for their location prior to coming to America. Finally, in July of 2022, official records were found showing that between 1873 and at least as late as 1878, Alwin and his family were living in the cities of Pilsen and Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Bohemia, in what is The Czech Republic today.

In a December 24, 1944 newspaper article honoring Alwin's oldest son, Paul and his wife, Mary, on their 50th anniversary, Paul says that, though born in Dresden, he lived in Vienna as a child. And that while working there as a stage carpenter, his father received a letter from an uncle in St. Louis saying that Texas was the coming country and advised him to bring his family to the United States. No evidence has been found that the family ever lived in Vienna. It is possible that, when it was said a 'great opera house', it was just assumed it was Vienna because of the fame surrounding Vienna's Great Opera House. There are state opera houses in Pilsen and Karlovy Vary where we know Alwin worked.17

The notes say that: “when Bismarck (the Prussian ruler) started passing laws coming down hard on the Socialists, Alwin and his family moved to Salzburg. Alwin was a Socialist Party local secretary and started having trouble with the authorities”. Supposedly it is at this time that Alwin starts saving money to go to the U.S. As of June 2023, no proof of a move to Salzburg has been found. By this time (1881) Alwin and Emma had 6 living children. One more baby, Hugo, was born before Alwin left for America in 1883 and Hugo says on a WWI draft card that he was born in Carlsbad. If the story from Paul, through his son George Feuerbacher, is correct, then all the children would have been born in Austria rather than Dresden or Pilsen or Karlovy Vary—and we have no proof of that. However, we do know, through birth and death records, that Otto and Maria Hedwig were born in Pilsen and that in April of 1875 Maria Hedwig was buried in Karlovy Vary.

Alwin was naturalized on 28 September 1892 in Travis County, Texas.18
